Looking for the Soul

Hogeschool PXL
2025
Wataru
Sato
This is a journey in search of the answer “Who am I?” and “What is a soul?”, and a story that is at the same time a fantasy.
One day in the small Belgian town of Hasselt, Holland "the glove," was feeling alone and adrift, when he met Elle, a talking dog. Through talking with Elle, he started to wonder about a soul. And heard of Shiro, a cat in Antwerp who might hold a clue to the nature of the soul. I decided to set out on a journey to discover whether I, too, possessed a soul.

In Antwerp, Holland, a half pair of glove—searched for Shiro, the cat Elle had told me about. After he arrived at a quiet park, where he met a cat matching Shiro’s description. Shiro led him to her home, where he met Donatello, a wise tortoise. Surprised that he could speak, Shiro introduced him as a possible tsukumogami—a Japanese spirit that inhabits objects. This sparked a conversation about the soul: comparing Japanese and Western concepts, touching on Greek philosophy—Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. he listened, overwhelmed but intrigued.

That encounter made Holland reflect on the differences between cultural ideas of the soul and the possibility that even objects might have one. He began to question his own identity and purpose. This reflection inspired an artwork titled Looking for a Soul, a piece that is repeatedly broken and repaired—symbolizing the search for meaning in imperfection. As he delved deeper, he became curious about disembodiment and quantum mechanics. he reached out via video call to Paul, an octopus he had seen in scientific footage. Paul spoke of the soul as a quantum function and the possibility of existence in higher dimensions. His words gave Holland a flicker of hope.

As part of his journey to understand the “shape of the soul,” Holland joined a glassblowing workshop in rural Germany. His first attempt was clumsy: he tried shaping a piece using a broken flowerpot and a piece of leather glove as a mold. Through repeated trial and error, he began to see a reflection of his own soul in the transparent, ever-changing nature of glass. He quietly confronted himself.

Inspired by Shiro, Holland also pursued kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. He traveled to Japan, searching for a school that would take him in. Eventually, he was accepted under certain conditions. He studied under Toki in Shibuya and, though the process was slow and painstaking, he committed himself to learning. Over the New Year holidays, he visited Aomori and found unexpected inspiration in the work of a Belgian artist. As he prepares to return, he quietly enjoys the winter in Japan, putting the final touches on his kintsugi.

Eventually, his glass piece, completed after many failures and repairs, broke once more. Though he felt a deep sense of loss, he refused to abandon it. He's come to believe that the soul reveals itself in the act of repair—that meaning lies not in flawlessness, but in the willingness to mend. Just like humans, objects live with their wounds. Through the lens of kintsugi, we see that damage can deepen the bond between people and things. We honor the breaks not by hiding them, but by making them beautiful.

In today’s throwaway culture, we discard things at the first sign of damage. But every object carries the imprint of someone’s hands and thoughts. By restoring broken objects and turning them into art—scars and all—we give form to the idea that even objects have souls. Still, not everything can be fixed. Choosing what to keep and what to let go of is never easy. Yet every broken thing we encounter carries meaning. Holland believes he met them not by accident, but by fate. In their fragments, he senses their feelings—and through his work, he restores their souls.

Altijd in twee woorden. Erfgoed en verval volgens Caitlin DeSilvey

Universiteit Gent

Fay

Idealized bodies, internalized pain

The body as a muse
How many times have we heard or read this phrase?
From a very young age, we are constantly bombarded
with images of the body—whether in cartoons portraying
ultra-thin, flawless princesses or superheroes with
hyper-muscular physiques. These images, which we car-
ry with us daily, are not harmless representations. They
are vehicles of aesthetic ideals that, much like those
seen throughout art history, have taught us to perceive
the body in specific, culturally determined ways.
Over the centuries, artistic depictions of the human
body—from classical Greek statues and Renaissance
works to Cubist interpretations and contemporary body
art—have played a key role in constructing and perpe-
tuating unattainable beauty standards, shaping both so-
cial and individual expectations. But how exactly has the
representation of the body in art history contributed to
the construction of these aesthetic ideals and canons—
so deeply rooted that they influence contemporary body
perception? And how has this influence, compounded by
the rise of social media and advertising, become a sour-
ce of psychological distress and a possible contributor to
mental health issues such as eating disorders?
This thesis seeks to explore these questions by tracing
the evolution of aesthetic canons from antiquity to their
modern-day rupture, and by offering a neuroscientific,
philosophical, and phenomenological investigation into
how humans perceive themselves—whether through the
imagery in paintings or the visuals that surround us daily.
To carry out this research, a combination of scientific,
artistic, and bibliographic sources has been employed,
alongside a qualitative analysis based on open inter-
views and the collection of personal diaries, as discus-
sed in Chapter 4.
This study does not merely observe how the body has
been represented; it questions how such representations
have shaped a collective imagination around the “ideal”
body—and how that imagination continues to impact in-
dividual self-perception. The aim is twofold: on one hand,
to understand how and where these mechanisms that
generate aesthetic norms originated—analyzing how the
body has been used as a foundational element for the
rules embedded in modern society; on the other, to in-
vestigate the psychological and social impact this exerts
on younger generations. To this the thesis is divided into
four chapters.
The first provides a historical-artistic overview of body
representation across different artistic periods. The se-
cond chapter explores the meaning of body perception,
including body image, body schema, and the distinction
between the lived body and the idealized body. The third
chapter examines the connection between the body and
aesthetic norms, offering a more philosophical and phe-
nomenological interpretation of reality.
.
Finally, the fourth chapter introduces the field resear-
ch conducted with students at KASK School of Arts
in Ghent, with reflections and analyses of the inter-
view responses. In a world that expects perfection
from us—professionally, socially, economically, and
even personally—there is no space for failure when
it comes to the body. This reality is so deeply woven
into our cultural fabric that it becomes nearly impos-
sible to detach ourselves from it. This thesis aims to
be a point of reflection—a space for questioning why
we are so profoundly conditioned by what we should
look like or become, rather than focusing on simply
living the one life we are given.

From Seeing To Sensing Their Suffering Through The Screen

Spatial transcriptomics was deemed Nature’s method of the year in 2020. Because of these novel technologies, it is now possible to analyze subcellular RNA localization in a systematic and large scale manner. This will allow us to answer interesting fundamental biological questions in a variety of biological domains, in health and disease. However, computational methods to characterize subcellular RNA localization are still in their infancy. We therefore aim to tackle the following questions as part of this master thesis study:
How does one automatically classify whether a gene shows a subcellular localized expression pattern or not?
● Using supervised classification
○ Which classification algorithm is best suited? And how do we train it optimally
○ What is the performance of the optimal model?
○ Can we aggregate model classifications of a gene over every cell, and can we create a reliable statistical test to discern the probability that a gene localizes non-randomly?
○ If we can classify patterns from non-patterns, can we classify which specific pattern it is?
● Can we infer subcellular localization directly from the latent space embedding of an in-house developed neural network model, without training a classifier first?
● Do these results on simulated data generalize to real biological/experimental data?

On Possible Roles of Machine Learning Applications for Painting Conservation: a Review of the State of the Art

Universiteit Antwerpen

Is it possible to predict the area-level prevalence of COVID-19 infections in Belgium by
analyzing self-reported symptoms on Twitter? This research project is about generating
estimates of the incidence of COVID-19 infections, at the municipality level, by using
Multilevel Regression Post-Stratification (MrP) to account for sampling biases in the social
media sample. At first, tweets are obtained from users based on keywords derived from
previous research, e.g., tweets mentioning fever, cough, loss of taste, fatigue, etc. Then, key
demographic and geographical features of interest are extracted using the M3 deep learning
pipeline, as well as simple self-reported characteristics, effectively transforming the
unstructured twitter sample into a survey-like object. Finally, based on these demographic
features and census characteristics, a mixed effects logistic regression model with
post-stratification according to the Belgian census is proposed to forecast the number of
infected individuals on a particular day. This study intends to contribute to the proof of
concept of a complete end to end pipeline to perform real time predictions of disease
prevalence at a granular level in a population using social media data.

Liver stage malaria - Investigating the interaction between the malaria circumsporozoite protein and host importin-α proteins

Karl Jaspers' Philosophical Faith in the Face of the Problem of Nihilism

KU Leuven
2020
Vinsent
Nollet
Once the boundaries between immanent existence and transcendence have been drawn, a typically modern undertaking, all we are left with is the sensible, whereas the supersensible becomes synonymous with the illusionary. This predicament does not have to be inherently problematic, at least from a religious point of view. For philosophy, however, it has often been understood in terms of a disaster, addressed with the ambiguous notion of nihilism. This is particularly true of post-Nietzschean philosophy, in which a holistic understanding of the notion of nihilism is often adopted to argue for the impossibility of both philosophy and transcendence. In this master’s thesis I investigate the relationship between nihilism, philosophy and transcendence as it came about in the philosophy of Karl Jaspers (1883–1969). This 20th century German thinker took great interest in the concern of the captivity of the immanence of thought and formulated creative answers to the question of transcendence after the alleged death of God. For Jaspers, the problem of nihilism was perennial to philosophy, and in the course of his life he devoted many pages to an attempt of overcoming it.
First, this thesis analyses the problem of nihilism on its own, in its pre-Nietzschean and Nietzschean manifestations, to come to terms with its alleged threat to philosophy. With regard to the vastness and richness of the notion, some topics are inevitably left out, such as the religious nihilism of Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, or the extensive elaborations on nihilism in contemporary continental philosophy, for example on the divergence between the interpretations of Martin Heidegger and Emanuele Severino. Second, we turn to Jaspers’ own understanding of nihilism. Jaspers defined the nature and value of philosophy through its confrontation with nihilism, which, for him, represented a kind of anti-philosophy. Philosophy had to go through nihilism to become true philosophizing. Jaspers proposed an ingenious argument that separates nihilism from philosophy, existence from immanence and truth from knowledge. To make this case, we primarily turn to Jaspers’ Von der Wahrheit, Der philosophische Glaube and his books on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. In Nietzsche und das Christentum, for example, Jaspers argued that Nietzsche at times separated the figure of Jesus from Christianity. In this separation, Jaspers argued, a possible way of overcoming Nietzsche’s nihilism in a philosophy that originates in love was already made possible by the fundamental distinctions of Nietzsche’s own critique of Christianity, for example his dismissal of all contradictions.

This research set out to systematically and empirically assess the harms of contemporary Nigerian-based piracy across multiple bearers and interest dimensions. To do so, an innovative harm assessment framework, developed by Greenfield and Paoli (2013) was employed. The assessment framework, a multi-step exercise comprised of distinct analytical phases and processes, required the articulation of business models for each of the primary modes of Nigerian-based piracy, the identification of possible harms and bearers, the evaluation of the incidence and severity of actual harms, the rating and prioritization of harms and finally, investigating potential causes of the identified harms. To do so, a mixed-methods approach was employed relying on both primary and secondary data sources. Methods included an extensive literature review, content analysis of over 400 piracy incident reports and semi-structured interviews.

EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENT BUS LANES: CASE STUDY

Universiteit Gent

Margot
Behaeghe
This master thesis aims to acquire more understanding in the advantages of bus lanes. The paper is subdivided into two main parts. The first part of the research is a literature study, where one will investigate very briefly the evolution of traffic and the use of public transport. This will be followed by a closer look into the phenomenon of bus lanes. Here one will summarize the different types of bus lanes and their possible advantages in certain situations. The first part will be closed with the information one gained during the literature study concerning the methods of measurements to mathematize and visualize the possible relevant advantages. There are two common ways in capturing the details of the underlying system, the first one is a method based on simulation (microscopic-cellular automata). The second one is based on an analytical approach (the queuing theory).
In the second part one will couple the gained knowledge regarding the literature study with a case study in Ghent. For this research one has chosen the Rooigemlaan, in particular the area of the intersection between the Rooigemlaan and the Drongensesteenweg in Ghent. The goal of this case study will be to scale the advantages of an ordinary lane, a dedicated bus lane with and without set back and a lane with intermitted priority for buses. These advantages will be linked with the advantages offered by the use of transit signal priority. To end this thesis one will evaluate the previous described bus lane types and their influences on traffic, this will be done by sensitivity analysis where one will change the input values. To finalize the research, a conclusion will be formed based on a cost-benefit analysis.
