Freeform Catoptric Design of Wide-Field-of-View Spectral Imagers for UV Spaceborne Observation of Mars

Vrije Universiteit Brussel
2026
Artyom
Petrosyan
Wide-field-of-view (WFOV) imaging systems are highly valued for space-based
observation. They are particularly challenging to design due to the presence of
off-axis aberrations. This thesis presents three novel wide-field-of-view (WFOV)
ultraviolet (UV) imaging architectures for the Mars Imager for Dust and Ice
clouds Monitoring (MIDIM): a 2D non-scanning multispectral imager, a 2D
scanning multispectral imager, and a 1D pushbroom multispectral imager. The UV
spectral range is intended and optimized for climate monitoring of Mars, including
atmospheric circulation and dynamics, dust cycles and storms, and water cycles,
clouds, and atmospheric chemistry.
Our research work tackles the optical design of WFOV UV imagers, exploring
different configurations and benefiting from freeform optical design. The key
challenges we faced were dealing with the off-axis aberrations due to the wide
fields, vignetting, and angle-of-incidence (AOI) reduction, while still keeping the
designs manufacturable and within the packaging requirements. Furthermore, the
UV operation range further increased the complexity and difficulty of the design as
the optical throughput needs to be increased due to low radiometric signals paired
with the small Airy disk compared to larger wavelength ranges. Finally, to ensure a
manufacturable design, a design-for-manufacturing approach was adopted, taking
system tolerances into account.
The 2D scanning multispectral imager showed the most optimal performance
despite its increased system complexity, such as the inclusion of a scan mirror,
while the 2D non-scanning multispectral imager showed the worst nominal
and radiometric performance. The 1D pushbroom multispectral imager showed
a comparable nominal performance to the 2D scanning system. However,
it lacked the tolerance robustness. The 2D scanning multispectral imager
shows an unprecedented performance featuring a WFOV of 48° × 10°, spatial
resolution of 2.50 km, F/# of 4.63, 80% of the encircled energy confined within
a radius of 2.15 µm, distortion of 7.30%, MTF ≥ 0.91 at 50 cycles/mm, volume of
170 × 150× 135 mm³, and smeared spatial resolutions between 5.96 km and
12.06 km for an SNR of 100 at 220 nm on Mars.
This work presents the full optical design methodology and results, adopting a
design for manufacturing approach, taking into account the path towards further
prototyping of the design. Consequently, with our research, we hope to pave
the way towards a novel UV space-based imaging telescope, enhancing space
exploration.

Pulled in the Wrong Direction! Rethinking Response Control in Computational Models of Conflict Tasks

KU Leuven
2026
Stien
Mommen
In daily life, we constantly make decisions that require us to navigate multiple sources of information. For example, when deciding whether to push or pull to open a door, the design of the door handle may trigger the automatic response tendency to pull, while a “push” sign indicates the opposite response. This mismatch illustrates how various informational cues can signal different response options that compete for activation, thereby placing demands on our ability to control responses. Such situations have sparked a large body of research to study how well individuals can flexibly control their responses during cognitive conflict.

The central problem identified and addressed in this Master Thesis is that current conceptualizations of response control lack the specificity to provide a complete picture of this control ability. Traditionally, researchers have relied on summary statistics that only provide a coarse description of response control. The move toward computational modeling, with the Diffusion Model for Conflict tasks (DMC), allows response control to be studied in terms of latent processes that give rise to behavior. Despite these advances, I argue that a critical oversight remains: current model-based measures of response control neglect the full state of the decision-maker. Specifically, distractor strength, as quantified by the model’s “peak amplitude” parameter, is used as a proxy for response control. In other words, the notion of response control is often approached in a narrow and isolated manner. To address this oversight, the present thesis aims to refine the conceptualization of response control by taking the broader decision context into account. The first part therefore investigates how peak amplitude interacts with other DMC parameters, using a simulation-based approach. Based on these findings, alternative measures of response control are developed and systematically evaluated against comparative criteria. In the final part of the present work, the most robust measure is applied on empirical data in relation to the existence of a common response control mechanism underlying performance in different conflict tasks.

Through theoretical simulations, the results show that peak amplitude should not be considered in isolation to study response control. Rather, the effect of distractor strength (peak amplitude) on behavior depends on the amount of evidence one accumulates (decision boundary) and efficiency of evidence accumulation (drift rate). This has important implications: two individuals with the same peak amplitude may nevertheless differ greatly in how cognitive conflict impacts their decision formation. Therefore, I provide a novel conceptualization of response control that accounts for the dynamic interplay between automatic and controlled activation. Specifically, Triple R emerges as the most robust model-based measure of response control among the set of candidates outlined in this thesis. Furthermore, when applied to empirical data, the significant positive correlation of Triple R between different conflict tasks provides evidence for a common response control mechanism across contexts. This finding speaks directly to the long-standing debate on the domain-generality of response control and demonstrates the value of Triple R as a context-sensitive measure of response control.

Deux Fantaisies pour la Guitare - Francesco Molino: A comparative study between a 19th-century and 21st-century guitar in a modern performance setting

LUCA School of Arts
2026
Nele
Vanmunster

Generative AI-Based Design of Electric Machines — A CVAE-based Framework for the Optimisation of Interior Permanent Magnet Motors for the Automotive Market

KU Leuven

Lorenz
De Maeyer
Electric traction motors for hybrid and battery vehicles are currently designed by
wrapping a finite-element key-performance-indicator (KPI) evaluator in an evolu
tionary optimisation loop, an approach that can take days of compute on a multi-core
node per customer case. This thesis addresses the same problem from the inverse
direction: given a target peak performance profile together with the electrical limits
imposed by the inverter and battery, generate a diverse set of compliant double-V
interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) geometries. The pro
posed framework combines three components, using a dataset of 85384 physically
valid samples obtained by latin hypercube sampling of the 17 free geometric pa
rameters: (i) a residual multilayer-perceptron surrogate that maps geometry and
electrical limits to the 80-point peak torque–speed curve through a 19-component
principal-component bottleneck, (ii) a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE)
with a 15-dimensional latent space that learns to generate performance-compliant
geometries, given the working conditions, and (iii) a gradient-based latent space
optimisation stage that refines a sampled candidate towards minimal volume under
soft performance-compliance and structural-integrity penalties driven by the frozen
surrogate.

On the held-out test set, the surrogate reaches a mean relative L2 error of 0.62%
on the denormalised torque curve at sub-millisecond inference cost. A performance
regularised CVAE variant, which augments the evidence lower bound with a dif
ferentiable compliance penalty derived from the frozen surrogate, lifts the mean
prior-sampling compliance on eight industrial conditions from 49.1% to 75.7% while
preserving roughly 86% of the per-feature design-range coverage. The subsequent
latent-space optimisation returns a compliant candidate for every one of the eight
conditions and for both CVAE variants, converging within roughly 100 iterations and
finishing in about 45s per condition on a single CPU core. A single FEM run con
firms that the optimised torque–speed curve passes through the requested operating
points. The framework therefore compresses what is currently a days-long search
into a sub-minute generative step. Thermal, efficiency, noise-vibration-harshness,
and demagnetisation behaviour remain out of scope and are identified as the prior
ity directions for further work.

Metacognitive Insight into Interfering Information During Decision-Making Processes

KU Leuven
2026
Eren
Aslan
The ability to control and suppress unwanted influences on decision-making processes is essential for adaptive behaviour. While research has shown that people can adjust their behaviour following conflict between two competing response alternatives, it remains unclear whether individuals have metacognitive insight into the extent to which conflicting and irrelevant information affects their decisions. Insight into interfering information can facilitate the optimisation of cognitive control strategies during the decision process.

This study aimed to understand whether subjective experiences of interference align with objective conflict modulation and whether these experiences correspond to behavioural performance and conflict levels induced by task manipulations. Fifty-one participants completed a Flanker task in which stimulus congruency and flanker distance were manipulated. After each trial, participants rated the degree of interference on a continuous scale, obtaining a trial-by-trial measure of their metacognitive sense of conflict. Linear mixed-effects models revealed that reaction times, accuracy, and interference ratings were sensitive to congruency and flanker distance. By fitting the Diffusion Model for Conflict (DMC) to empirical data, we showed that flanker distance primarily modulates latent parameters that measure conflict strength. We assessed the relationship between objective and subjective measures of interference by regressing peak amplitude, a proxy of interference in the DMC, and stimulus congruency on subjective reports. To further understand this relationship, simulation techniques were
leveraged to model the relationship between peak amplitude and subjective interference.

The regression model provided evidence that individuals have insight into interfering information during decision-making. Model simulations further supported this claim by generating results that closely replicated the qualitative features of the empirical data. These findings support an account of conflict monitoring theory that bridges behavioural performance, computational modelling and subjective experience. Future research should extend these findings to other conflict tasks and incorporate neuroimaging techniques to further validate the results. Ultimately, combining subjective reports and objective measures of interference offers a more comprehensive approach to understanding adaptive decision-making when interfering information is present.

EmbedLLM from legacy documents to embedded XR instructions: automatic context aware content generation to support manual task execution

Universiteit Hasselt
2026
Bram
Verstappen
This thesis addresses the cognitive friction associated with executing manual tasks using flat 2D documentation in spatial computing environments, where users must constantly shift attention between instructions, physical tools, and machinery. To solve this, we present EmbedLLM, the first automated, context-aware content reformatting framework that adapts both content design and presentation to the user’s environment and specific goal. EmbedLLM converts unstructured step-based PDF manuals into 3D spatially embedded instructions in Virtual Reality (VR). The system operates via a pipeline that abstracts the environment into a semantic scene graph, leverages a multi-stage Large Language Model (LLM) reasoning chain to construct step-based instruction nodes and semantic edges, and instantiates these panels using a novel, semantically aware force-directed 3D label placement algorithm to achieve spatial equilibrium and prevent visual clutter.
We evaluated EmbedLLM through a preliminary preference survey (n = 20) across diverse environments and a within-subjects user study (n = 12) comparing the framework to a traditional floating PDF window during 3D printer maintenance tasks. The preference survey showed that EmbedLLM achieves significantly higher environmental alignment than traditional baseline documents, with participants strongly favoring spatial orchestration for complex, structurally demanding procedures. However, the task execution study revealed a clear trade-off: active task support with EmbedLLM resulted in significantly longer completion times (996.93 s vs. 580.46 s) and increased cognitive load (3.00 vs. 2.31 on the NASA-TLX scale). Qualitative feed-back suggests these performance costs stem from the rigid sequential pacing of the generated interface and novices struggling with hardware terminology.
This work contributes the technical pipeline of EmbedLLM, a semantically enhanced physics layout algorithm, and empirical insights on context-aware XR instruction delivery. Future research directions include real-time situated action updates, user skill level adaptation, and integration with agentic GUI automation and text-to-3D models.

Multiaxial fatigue-based topology optimisation under non-proportional loading: application to wheel design

KU Leuven

Jerôme
Vandecandelaere

----

This thesis develops a computational framework for structural topology optimisation
that explicitly accounts for multiaxial fatigue under non-proportional loading. While
fatigue is a frequently occurring failure mechanism in mechanical components, it is
often treated as a post-processing step rather than being integrated into the design
process. This work addresses that gap by embedding a critical-plane fatigue model
directly into the optimisation algorithm.

The framework incorporates the Brown–Miller strain-based fatigue criterion within a
density-based topology optimisation approach, enabling fatigue life prediction across
complex load paths. The implementation includes a full analytical sensitivity analysis,
both direct and adjoint, to ensure accurate and efficient optimisation with
gradient-based solvers.

The methodology is first validated on a benchmark L-bracket to demonstrate its
performance relative to compliance- and stress-based objectives. It is then applied
to the design of an automotive wheel subjected to a rotating bending test. This is
a standardised, multiaxial and non-proportional fatigue test that every aftermarket
wheel must pass. The fatigue-optimised designs exhibit improved fatigue damage
distribution, reduced stress concentrations and extended predicted fatigue life compared to different design approaches.

By embedding fatigue life prediction into the optimisation loop, this research bridges
the gap between structural efficiency and long-term durability. The proposed approach offers a promising pathway toward more resilient designs in demanding engineering applications.

While links between sweet taste preference and impulsivity exist, the relationship with specific sweet liking phenotypes remains underexplored. This relationship may have implications for understanding reward related systems and dysfunction. This study investigated the association between sweet liking phenotypes and dispositional
impulsivity, using the Barratt Impulsivity Scale-11 (BIS-11), the BIS/BAS Scales, the Effortful Control Scale, and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). A cross-sectional design was employed with N=97 healthy adult participants. Sweet liking phenotypes were classified based on sweet taste assessment. Analyses revealed no significant differences in
BIS/BAS, Effortful Control, BIS-11, or overall IGT learning trends across the sweet liking phenotype groups. Although not confirmed by primary group comparisons, exploratory analysis of IGT performance suggested a potential trend for increased selection of the disadvantageous Deck B over time among individuals with higher sweet liking, pointing to impaired learning from negative outcomes and an insensitivity to punishment. These
findings suggest that BIS/BAS, Effortful Control, BIS-11 scores, and Iowa Gambling Task performance may not strongly differentiate sweet liking phenotypes; however, the study's power was limited by the relatively small sample size. Future studies employing dedicated tasks designed to isolate specific impulsivity facets are warranted.
Additionally, investigating the neural correlates of this relationship, particularly involving the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, could further clarify its mechanisms.

This dissertation investigates the design and development of braided Peltier devices for achieving active thermoelectric cooling in shape memory alloy (SMA) actuation mechanisms. The research focuses on the integration of periodically nickel-electroplated thermoelectric fibres into flexible braided textile structures that thermally couple and act as a sheath to SMA wires. By leveraging the Peltier effect within the braid architecture, the system is designed to enhance the thermal management and dynamic response of the SMA-based actuators. The work includes fibre fabrication, braid prototyping, electrical and thermal characterisation, and performance testing of the integrated thermoelectric-SMA smart textile. Results indicate that while passive thermoelectric integration modestly improves actuation timing and force response, active Peltier cooling alone was unable to overcome the dominant effects of Joule heating in the current system. Nonetheless, the trends observed suggest potential for improving thermal management in smart textile systems through enhanced thermoelectric design. The findings contribute to the advancement of flexible, textile-integrated thermoelectric devices and their application in wearables and responsive materials.

The Sound of the City: Object Recognition of Sound Sources on Historical Photographs

This thesis explores how machine learning can be used to detect sound sources in historical photographs, with the aim of developing a model that can be used for historical soundscape reconstruction. While machine learning, and more specifically object detection, is increasingly being used in heritage studies, its application on historical photographs is largely unexplored.
The research is divided into four stages. First, three object detection models, YOLOv8, Faster R-CNN, and RetinaNet, were benchmarked on both modern and historical datasets to assess their baseline performance, without any training. Although all models performed significantly worse on historical photographs, YOLOv8 showed the smallest drop in accuracy. In the second and third parts, YOLOv8 was fine-tuned on two classes of sound-producing objects: an existing COCO class, “train”, and a newly added class, “carriage”. In total, over 1600 photographs were annotated for the various datasets. While the modest dataset size and limited computational resources influenced the performance of the custom models, the research nevertheless offers some interesting insights into the potential and limitations of applying object detection to historical photographs. In the last stage, a custom CycleGAN model was trained to transform modern images into a historical style and vice versa, helping to generate training data and reduce the need for manual annotation. The thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using object detection on historical photographs for historical soundscape research and highlights promising directions for future work on machine learning and heritage studies.

This study investigates the effectiveness of the New Approach to Accounting Education (NABO), a teaching method designed to introduce accounting to novice students in Belgian secondary schools. Specifically, we examine whether students taught using the NABO method demonstrate higher academic performance compared to those taught through traditional approaches. Additionally, we investigate the role of student motivation and engagement in influencing academic outcomes. A quasi-experimental design was employed, combining between- and within-subjects elements, including a control group with a pretest-posttest setup. Data were collected over four academic years (2018-2022) from 582 high school students. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed hypotheses. Results show that students taught with the NABO method significantly outperform their peers in traditional settings. Moreover, motivation and engagement have a strong positive effect on academic achievement. These findings contribute to accounting education by showing that innovative teaching methods can enhance learning outcomes for novice students, while also offering practical recommendations and avenues for future research on improving introductory accounting courses.

Decoding Metacognitive Sensitivity from EEG using Deep Learning.

KU Leuven

Vanden Abeele
Metacognition, the ability to think about one's thinking processes, is vital for
professional performance, academic achievement, and mental health. However, its
ambiguous nature and subjective measurement techniques across various fields have
posed significant challenges to research. Cognitive neuroscience offers a unique
solution by providing objective measurements that link metacognition to brain activity,
thereby establishing a ground truth. Recently, the convergence of explainable artificial
intelligence (XAI) and perceptual decision-making, a subsection of metacognition
within cognitive neuroscience, has led to the development of the WaveFusion
framework. This innovative framework holds the potential to contribute to the
unification of the fragmented metacognition research fields.
The aim of this thesis was to enhance the WaveFusion framework, an explainable
deep learning model, to classify metacognitive sensitivity and confidence using EEG
data. The objectives were (1) to achieve a classification accuracy of 95% for
metacognitive sensitivity, (2) to improve the accuracy for metacognitive confidence to
97.5%, and (3) to identify key ambiguities and limitations in metacognition research.
This study utilized an EEG dataset with event-related potentials (ERP) responselocked for type 1 decisions. Data preprocessing addressed dataset imbalances
through augmentation and balanced batch sampling. EEG samples were transformed
into spectrograms and processed using the deep learning architecture comprising a
Lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (LWCNN), a Squeeze and Excitation
Network (SEN), and a classification network. The model was pre-trained using Subject
Aware Contrastive loss (SAC) and trained with binary cross-entropy loss. SEN
facilitated the models explainability by visualizing the created attention weights
through topoplots, providing insights into brain areas used for classification.
The WaveFusion model achieved high classification accuracy, reaching 99.7% for
metacognitive confidence and 99.1% for metacognitive sensitivity. These
improvements were due to a larger selection of electrodes, response-locked ERP
data, and increased dataset size. The WaveFusion model not only demonstrates high
classification accuracy but also offers enhanced explainability. This allows the
framework to contribute to three major ambiguities: (1) the relationship between
metacognition and executive functions, (2) its connection to consciousness, and (3)
the domain generality of metacognition. By leveraging the WaveFusion framework, we
can overcome limitations in cognitive neuroscience research through (1) utilizing
transfer learning to compare relationships, (2) employing automatic classification to
investigate ecological validity, and (3) expanding the framework for multimodality to
integrate insights across various fields.
Future research should focus on increasing data variability, addressing outlier
performances, and improving interpretability through advanced visualization
techniques to enhance the WaveFusion model’s robustness and applicability across
cognitive neuroscience domains.

The Performing Person. Judith Butler and Wojtyla on Gender

KU Leuven
2024
Bram
Schreurs
Over the last thirty years, gender has become an increasingly hotly debated topic within the Roman Catholic
Church. The core of the debate seems to revolve around the nature of gender. On one side stand gender
scholars such as de Beauvoir, Wittig, and Butler who regard gender as socially constructed. Butler as the
most influential philosopher of gender suggested that gender is performative. It has no particular basis in
nature but it is rather in performing acts that the reality of gender comes to be. On the other stands a reading
of gender as undetachable from biological sex. Readings of the latter sort often draw upon John Paul II’s
complementarian anthropology as sketched in his Theology of the Body. However, as an academic in
philosophy, Karol Wojtyła developed an understanding of the human person as constituted through their
acts in his book Person and Act. Due to the similarity in the concept of performed gender and that of the
enacted person, the following question arises: how does gender fit within Wojtyła’s understanding of the
person and how does this add up to John Paul II’s later complementarian anthropology?
To answer these questions, the first chapter will outline gender performativity as Judith Butler
understands is. However, the emphasis is placed on performativity rather than gender per se. Therefore, the
chapter first explores the roots of Butler’s gender performativity in the performative speech theory of J.L.
Austin. Thereafter Butler’s own contributions and adaptations to Austin’s framework are explored. The
main takeaways constitute the definition of performativity as a new reality established through acting act
as well as the insight that any performance is by definition rooted in social conventions.
In the second chapter, the primary findings of Karol Wojtyła in Person and Act are examined in
relation to Butler’s concept of performativity. Wojtyła presents an analysis of the human person in which
the person itself is constituted, changed, even “made”, through acts. The chapter goes on to illustrate just
how similar Butler’s concept of performativity really is to Wojtyła’s understanding of the establishing of
the person through the act. From there on several other similarities and differences between both authors
are explored, showing them to be better read in tandem than as opposed to one another.
In the third and final chapter, we explore where performative gender would fit in Wojtyła’s
framework established in Person and Act. This exploration results in the finding that gender is more
properly understood as part of the acting, personal capacities of the human person rather than their
biological nature. From this intermediary conclusion, the chapter shifts focus to John Paul II’s Theology of
the Body to see whether Person and Act’s personalistic framework is applied correctly when it comes to
gender. The thesis concludes that it is not because Theology of the Body intertwines biological sex with
gender, thereby not doing justice to gender as part of the person and as constituted in the act.
The entire thesis comes together in a brief conclusion about the performance of drag, summarising
the main points and showing how drag is met with different responses by Karol Wojtyła and John Paul II.

The United States - Colombia Free Trade Agreement: Beneficial for Colombian firms? Analysis investigating the impact on firm dynamics of Colombian exporting firms

This dissertation investigates the impact of the United States - Colombia Free Trade Agreement (May 15th, 2012) on the export performance, product innovativeness and entry-exit rates of Colombian firms active in the US export market. Two different analyses have been conducted using a comprehensive dataset spanning from 2008 to 2016, covering 715,157 observations and employing three quantitative econometric techniques (Difference-in-Difference Estimator, Propensity Score Matching and Synthetic Control Method). The main analysis, on firm-product level, a rather novel approach, reveals significant negative average results for both export performance (measured in terms of export sales and product portfolio) and product innovation. Colombian firms exporting to the United States experience on average a decline of 10.9% in export sales, a 3.6% reduction in their product portfolio and introduce 0.13 fewer products in comparison to the situation where they benefited from the unilateral ATPA/ATPDEA agreement. While some non-fuel-related industries and small-sized companies benefit from the implementation of the agreement, the majority of medium-sized firms experience a negative impact. The secondary analysis, on country-level, whilst not being conclusive, indicates that Colombian firms were overall stimulated to enter the US export market. However, this trend was particularly driven by the high entry rates of the smallest firms. In general, the results underscore asymmetries in the FTA. This research contributes to understanding the impact of trade agreements on firm dynamics, highlighting sectoral and firm-size variations in response to trade liberalization and indicates that FTAs do not necessarily lead to average positive impacts on firm dynamics for both parties.

Spatial transcriptomics was deemed Nature’s method of the year in 2020. Because of these novel technologies, it is now possible to analyze subcellular RNA localization in a systematic and large scale manner. This will allow us to answer interesting fundamental biological questions in a variety of biological domains, in health and disease. However, computational methods to characterize subcellular RNA localization are still in their infancy. We therefore aim to tackle the following questions as part of this master thesis study:
How does one automatically classify whether a gene shows a subcellular localized expression pattern or not?
● Using supervised classification
○ Which classification algorithm is best suited? And how do we train it optimally
○ What is the performance of the optimal model?
○ Can we aggregate model classifications of a gene over every cell, and can we create a reliable statistical test to discern the probability that a gene localizes non-randomly?
○ If we can classify patterns from non-patterns, can we classify which specific pattern it is?
● Can we infer subcellular localization directly from the latent space embedding of an in-house developed neural network model, without training a classifier first?
● Do these results on simulated data generalize to real biological/experimental data?

The Political Imperative of Public Space - Public sphere and space in the Brussels Capital Region

KU Leuven
2024
Gommaar
Van Reybrouck Van Gelder
This thesis explores the political imperative of public space in the Brussels Capital Region. The city-region, marked by administrative complexity and political stratification, is today also subject to a disconnect between citizens and representative democratic instances. This disaffection is exacerbated by broader political polarisation and hyper-politicization within Belgian society. Furthermore, despite discussions about a reappropriation of public space, true progress remains relative and often coincides with creeping processes of depoliticization.
Public space, however, plays a crucial role within the public sphere, which has been influentially theorised by Jürgen Habermas and Hannah Arendt. Habermas's historical analysis of the bourgeois public sphere highlights principles of accessibility, rational deliberation, and reasoned opinion-formation. This has been critiqued by Nancy Fraser for its exclusion of subaltern groups, leading to her concept of multiple counter-public spheres. Arendt in a different stance emphasises plurality as fundamental to politics, with the public sphere then being the site for action and speech.
The public sphere, although non-dismissible for forming critical public opinion and active citizenship in contemporary democracy, is today challenged by delocalisation and disembodiment. Therefore, in response to challenges to both sphere and space, the political imperative of public space proves essential to (re)consider. Public space must in this regard be seen as a relational entity with socio-physical and spatio-temporal dimensions. Characteristics such as accessibility, inclusivity, and potential for transgression are key, yet public spaces are more often dominated by patterns of e.g. securitization, privatization, and commodification.
The conceptualization of political public space in this thesis considers it as either a playground or a theatre, focusing on democratic performance of both citizens and architecture in itself. The general framework is subsequently applied to the case of the Brussels Capital Region. An analysis of XDGA’s non-realised design for the Schuman Square, a significant political and symbolic site, illustrates the potential and limitations of formal public spaces for embedding political action. In contrast, but refraining from hierarchisation, Filter Café Filtré Atelier’s OpenStreets project demonstrates the potential of informal public spaces to foster political engagement and activism around themes of common interest. The Decoratelier case study ultimately emphasizes the importance of genuine political engagement in public space, warning against superficial participation.
Addressing the political imperative of public space proves crucial for enabling citizen engagement within societal transformation. While public space alone cannot resolve polarisation, it can contribute by making abstract disagreements tangible and fostering continuous negotiation and debate. The thesis identifies key socio-physical and architectural considerations for evaluating the political imperative of public spaces, such as representation, control, and multi-publicity. The goal is to create a framework for spaces that represent both diverse publics and society, while enabling collective action and participation. After all, architects have a significant role in designing these spaces through re-engaging politics and aesthetics by treating space as an active participant in societal and political dynamics.

Forecasting residential PV power using transfer learning with synthetic data

KU Leuven
2024
Robbe
Vander Eeckt
Solar power forecasting is essential for optimizing energy use in residential households.
Machine learning models are promising for this power forecasting because they can
capture its non-linear characteristics. Nonetheless, these models require a significant
amount of data that is unavailable for new installations. To overcome the limited
data availability, this thesis proposes a transfer learning model using Long ShortTerm Memory (LSTM) networks trained on synthetic photovoltaic (PV) generation
provided by the Photovoltaic Geographical Information System. Using the metadata
about a PV installation, this synthetic data simulates the past production of the
new PV installation. The model utilizes Numerical Weather Predictions (NWP)
and autoregressive covariates. This proposed model is compared to benchmarks,
including models trained only on sites’ actual PV power, physical models, and TL
models with no weather covariates.
The research investigates the effect of physics-informed variables on the accuracy
of transfer learning. Furthermore, it examines the usage of reanalysis data to train
with synthetic PV data due to the low accessibility of historical Numerical Weather
Prediction output. Walk-forward validation is employed for forecasting the actual
PV power to simulate real-life conditions and the impact of increasing target data.
The results demonstrate that models trained with historical Numerical Weather
Prediction data achieve higher zero-shot forecasting accuracy. Contrary to expectations, including physics-informed variables did not enhance performance; in fact,
it showed a slight decrease. Additionally, models trained on reanalysis data catch
up with those trained on historical NWP data once limited target data becomes
available.
Discussion highlights include the impact of Storm Darcy in February 2021, which
caused instability in machine learning models and the suitability of other ML models.
The proposed LSTM-based transfer learning model can provide accurate forecasts
even with no or limited actual PV power data, proving its potential for practical
applications in solar power forecasting for residential households.
