Freeform Catoptric Design of Wide-Field-of-View Spectral Imagers for UV Spaceborne Observation of Mars

Vrije Universiteit Brussel
2026
Artyom
Petrosyan
Wide-field-of-view (WFOV) imaging systems are highly valued for space-based
observation. They are particularly challenging to design due to the presence of
off-axis aberrations. This thesis presents three novel wide-field-of-view (WFOV)
ultraviolet (UV) imaging architectures for the Mars Imager for Dust and Ice
clouds Monitoring (MIDIM): a 2D non-scanning multispectral imager, a 2D
scanning multispectral imager, and a 1D pushbroom multispectral imager. The UV
spectral range is intended and optimized for climate monitoring of Mars, including
atmospheric circulation and dynamics, dust cycles and storms, and water cycles,
clouds, and atmospheric chemistry.
Our research work tackles the optical design of WFOV UV imagers, exploring
different configurations and benefiting from freeform optical design. The key
challenges we faced were dealing with the off-axis aberrations due to the wide
fields, vignetting, and angle-of-incidence (AOI) reduction, while still keeping the
designs manufacturable and within the packaging requirements. Furthermore, the
UV operation range further increased the complexity and difficulty of the design as
the optical throughput needs to be increased due to low radiometric signals paired
with the small Airy disk compared to larger wavelength ranges. Finally, to ensure a
manufacturable design, a design-for-manufacturing approach was adopted, taking
system tolerances into account.
The 2D scanning multispectral imager showed the most optimal performance
despite its increased system complexity, such as the inclusion of a scan mirror,
while the 2D non-scanning multispectral imager showed the worst nominal
and radiometric performance. The 1D pushbroom multispectral imager showed
a comparable nominal performance to the 2D scanning system. However,
it lacked the tolerance robustness. The 2D scanning multispectral imager
shows an unprecedented performance featuring a WFOV of 48° × 10°, spatial
resolution of 2.50 km, F/# of 4.63, 80% of the encircled energy confined within
a radius of 2.15 µm, distortion of 7.30%, MTF ≥ 0.91 at 50 cycles/mm, volume of
170 × 150× 135 mm³, and smeared spatial resolutions between 5.96 km and
12.06 km for an SNR of 100 at 220 nm on Mars.
This work presents the full optical design methodology and results, adopting a
design for manufacturing approach, taking into account the path towards further
prototyping of the design. Consequently, with our research, we hope to pave
the way towards a novel UV space-based imaging telescope, enhancing space
exploration.

Towards a Sustainable Volunteer Structure for AFS Sweden’s Camps

Arteveldehogeschool Gent
2026
Jorren
Almey

Decoding the Female Brain: Investigating Cerebral White Matter Changes throughout the Menopausal Transition, using diffusion MRI

Universiteit Gent
2026
Kato
Herregods
Women make up half of the global population and spend nearly one third of their lives in perior postmenopause. This period is marked by major hormonal changes that not only impact the reproductive system, the brain is greatly affected too. Despite this, the female brain remains understudied, and relatively little is known about how menopause influences brain health. Previous research has shown that during the menopause transition, the brain becomes less efficient at using glucose, its main energy source under normal circumstances. These metabolic changes may alter brain structure and function, potentially contributing to common menopause symptoms, such as hot flushes, mood changes or memory problems. They may also partly explain why women have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the menopausal brain by using advanced medical imaging techniques to investigate changes in the brain’s white matter. In the long term, this research may contribute to improved public health and women’s healthcare, by advancing our understanding of menopause-related brain changes and female brain aging. Findings may positively impact healthcare professionals, public health organizations, researchers in neuroscience and women’s health, pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Most importantly, this research may eventually improve patients’ quality of life by supporting better management of menopausal symptoms and informing earlier detection, prevention, and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Mapping and understanding farmers’ responses to gully-induced problems in the Abaya-Chamo Sub-Basin, Southern Ethiopia

KU Leuven
2026
Jeanne
Vandenbrande
Gully erosion threatens the livelihoods of rural farmers by causing direct cropland loss and reducing agricultural productivity. In the Shafe catchment of southern Ethiopia, smallholder farmers facing severe food insecurity have implemented gully interventions (GIs) to counter this land degradation. Yet the spatial distribution of these GIs remains highly uneven. This study investigates which GIs have been implemented, what drives their adoption, and whether this adoption has spread as a diffusion process over time.

To investigate GI adoption, fieldwork was conducted across two rural administrative units in the Shafe catchment. GI presence was mapped for 751 gullies based on field observations and drone surveys. Additionally, a household survey of 178 farmers was conducted, providing socio-economic and perceptual data of the farmers, their plots and their gullies. Variables were tested through univariate screening and logistic regression models. Finally, spatial clustering and spatio-temporal modelling were used to investigate the adoption of GIs over time.

Results indicate that GIs in the Shafe catchment are dominated by loose rock check dams and banana plantations. Conservation and economic motivations drive farmers to combine these interventions, since they promote gully stabilisation through sediment infilling while simultaneously creating additional agricultural opportunities on the gully floor. Field observations identified at least one GI in 18% of mapped gullies, with treated gullies being larger and located closer to roads and settlements.

The household survey, capturing individual farmer decisions across multiple gullies, suggests 48% of farmer-reported gullies have been treated at some point. Farmers across the study area share a broadly similar subsistence-oriented profile. With 88% of the farmers having implemented at least one GI somewhere on their land, motivation is near-universal. The central question is therefore not who adopts, but where: farmers preferentially treat gullies that are accessible, on productive plots close to the homestead, exclusively owned, and perceived as severely impacted. Adoption likelihood is slightly higher for farmers exclusively dependent on agriculture and those with sufficient economic surplus. Predictive models based on spatial variables and socio-economic variables provide a step towards a practical targeting framework.

This study also presents one of the first attempts to diffusion analysis for gully interventions. GI adoption shows significant spatial clustering. A weak but detectable diffusion effect suggesting that farmers are more likely to adopt GI when neighbouring farmers have done so in prior years, pointing to informal knowledge spreading. However, data limitations remain substantial and further research should confirm this with more complete data.

Potential of African Diasporic Spatiality in Adaptive Reuse and Postcolonial Placemaking

Universiteit Hasselt
2026
Brenda Jerotich
Maswan
By examining the postcolonial condition of the European metropole, as influenced by colonial and postcolonial migration, this thesis explores how African diasporic communities in Brussels engage in spatial practices as a legitimate form of architectural knowledge. Focusing on Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Matongé, it argues that the incremental, vernacular adaptations through which African migrants appropriate and reinterpret the European built environment constitute an alternative approach to placemaking. This approach has often been overlooked by conventional heritage and planning systems.
Drawing on postcolonial theory, diasporic urbanism, and African diasporic spatial
practice, this thesis develops a critical framework for reading African diasporic spatial
practice not as informality or deficit, but as a culturally embedded, socially driven
architectural knowledge. This framework is tested through ethnographic research of
Luce Beeckmans and site-writing, following Jane Rendell’s concept of critical spatial
practice, and applied through a design project for a former industrial complex at Rue
De Courtrai and Rue d’Ostende in Molenbeek.
The design proposes an adaptive reuse strategy grounded in the African diasporic
logic of negotiated visibility—the practice of managing presence and withdrawal
across the city and building scales simultaneously. By preserving existing street
façades, directing transformation inward through the inner block, and retaining existing
users, the project translates African diasporic spatial qualities into an architectural
methodology capable of producing an inclusive social infrastructure while resisting the
displacement pressures of ongoing urban renewal. In doing so, it positions adaptive
reuse not as a technical or aesthetic strategy but as a cultural and political redefinition
of space—one that recognises the African diaspora community in Molenbeek as
spatial agents in postcolonial placemaking.

POEMBAKterie: A characterisation of the household kitchen sink microbiome

Universiteit Antwerpen
2026
Jozefien
Mellebeek
The environmental microbiome plays a well-established role in influencing human health. While bacterial communities associated with hospital sinks have been extensively documented due to their relevance in infection control, the microbiome of sinks in non-clinical, domestic settings remains comparatively underexplored.
Therefore, the ongoing POEMBAKterie project in our research group aims to characterise the microbial composition of household kitchen sinks in Antwerp. In this thesis, a citizen science approach was employed to collect household kitchen sink samples and associated household metadata as part of the POEMBAKterie project.
Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to characterise bacterial community composition at high taxonomic resolution. In addition, cultivation-based methods using selective media were applied to detect viable opportunistic bacteria, with a focus on the detection of Escherichia coli. Sequencing data were analysed to assess
bacterial community composition, alpha and beta diversity and differences between sample types and households.
Sequencing revealed diverse microbial communities dominated by the phyla Pseudomonadota, Actinomycetota, Bacillota and Bacteroidota, consistent with previously described built-environment microbiomes. At the genus level, taxa such as Microbacterium, Acinetobacter, Paracoccus, Pseudomonas, Moraxella and Stenotrophomonas were most abundant, many of which have previously been associated with water systems, food-related environments, and human microbiota. Significant differences in bacterial community composition were observed between sample types, although substantial overlap and within-group variability were present. In contrast, variation between household locations was limited, likely due to the small sample size. Potential opportunistic bacterial taxa, including E. coli, were detected through both sequencing and cultivation-based approaches. However, overlap between the two methods was only partial, highlighting methodological differences related to viability assessment and methodological sensitivity. Importantly, the presence of these taxa alone is insufficient to infer pathogenicity or infection risk.
Overall, these findings indicate that kitchen sinks represent complex microbial ecosystems shaped by multiple environmental and human inputs and demonstrate the value of combining sequencing and cultivation to characterise both microbial diversity and viability.

A Research-Based Gamification Solution for Teaching Arrays to Novice Applied Science Students

Wood identification and color technological research on 17th-century Flemish cabinets containing ebony (imitation)

Universiteit Antwerpen

Hermsen

Pulled in the Wrong Direction! Rethinking Response Control in Computational Models of Conflict Tasks

KU Leuven
2026
Stien
Mommen
In daily life, we constantly make decisions that require us to navigate multiple sources of information. For example, when deciding whether to push or pull to open a door, the design of the door handle may trigger the automatic response tendency to pull, while a “push” sign indicates the opposite response. This mismatch illustrates how various informational cues can signal different response options that compete for activation, thereby placing demands on our ability to control responses. Such situations have sparked a large body of research to study how well individuals can flexibly control their responses during cognitive conflict.

The central problem identified and addressed in this Master Thesis is that current conceptualizations of response control lack the specificity to provide a complete picture of this control ability. Traditionally, researchers have relied on summary statistics that only provide a coarse description of response control. The move toward computational modeling, with the Diffusion Model for Conflict tasks (DMC), allows response control to be studied in terms of latent processes that give rise to behavior. Despite these advances, I argue that a critical oversight remains: current model-based measures of response control neglect the full state of the decision-maker. Specifically, distractor strength, as quantified by the model’s “peak amplitude” parameter, is used as a proxy for response control. In other words, the notion of response control is often approached in a narrow and isolated manner. To address this oversight, the present thesis aims to refine the conceptualization of response control by taking the broader decision context into account. The first part therefore investigates how peak amplitude interacts with other DMC parameters, using a simulation-based approach. Based on these findings, alternative measures of response control are developed and systematically evaluated against comparative criteria. In the final part of the present work, the most robust measure is applied on empirical data in relation to the existence of a common response control mechanism underlying performance in different conflict tasks.

Through theoretical simulations, the results show that peak amplitude should not be considered in isolation to study response control. Rather, the effect of distractor strength (peak amplitude) on behavior depends on the amount of evidence one accumulates (decision boundary) and efficiency of evidence accumulation (drift rate). This has important implications: two individuals with the same peak amplitude may nevertheless differ greatly in how cognitive conflict impacts their decision formation. Therefore, I provide a novel conceptualization of response control that accounts for the dynamic interplay between automatic and controlled activation. Specifically, Triple R emerges as the most robust model-based measure of response control among the set of candidates outlined in this thesis. Furthermore, when applied to empirical data, the significant positive correlation of Triple R between different conflict tasks provides evidence for a common response control mechanism across contexts. This finding speaks directly to the long-standing debate on the domain-generality of response control and demonstrates the value of Triple R as a context-sensitive measure of response control.

An Istanbul Tale - A Research on Identity and Belonging

Hogeschool PXL
2026
Busra
Kilisli

When the Lit hits the Fan: Shaping skilled literary readers in the English as a foreign language classroom through the use of fanfiction.

KU Leuven
2026
Margo
Roosen

Metacognitive Insight into Interfering Information During Decision-Making Processes

KU Leuven
2026
Eren
Aslan
The ability to control and suppress unwanted influences on decision-making processes is essential for adaptive behaviour. While research has shown that people can adjust their behaviour following conflict between two competing response alternatives, it remains unclear whether individuals have metacognitive insight into the extent to which conflicting and irrelevant information affects their decisions. Insight into interfering information can facilitate the optimisation of cognitive control strategies during the decision process.

This study aimed to understand whether subjective experiences of interference align with objective conflict modulation and whether these experiences correspond to behavioural performance and conflict levels induced by task manipulations. Fifty-one participants completed a Flanker task in which stimulus congruency and flanker distance were manipulated. After each trial, participants rated the degree of interference on a continuous scale, obtaining a trial-by-trial measure of their metacognitive sense of conflict. Linear mixed-effects models revealed that reaction times, accuracy, and interference ratings were sensitive to congruency and flanker distance. By fitting the Diffusion Model for Conflict (DMC) to empirical data, we showed that flanker distance primarily modulates latent parameters that measure conflict strength. We assessed the relationship between objective and subjective measures of interference by regressing peak amplitude, a proxy of interference in the DMC, and stimulus congruency on subjective reports. To further understand this relationship, simulation techniques were
leveraged to model the relationship between peak amplitude and subjective interference.

The regression model provided evidence that individuals have insight into interfering information during decision-making. Model simulations further supported this claim by generating results that closely replicated the qualitative features of the empirical data. These findings support an account of conflict monitoring theory that bridges behavioural performance, computational modelling and subjective experience. Future research should extend these findings to other conflict tasks and incorporate neuroimaging techniques to further validate the results. Ultimately, combining subjective reports and objective measures of interference offers a more comprehensive approach to understanding adaptive decision-making when interfering information is present.

Strategische markttoetreding tot de Duitse voedingssupplementensector

Hogeschool UCLL
2026
Brent
Goris

This thesis addresses the cognitive friction associated with executing manual tasks using flat 2D documentation in spatial computing environments, where users must constantly shift attention between instructions, physical tools, and machinery. To solve this, we present EmbedLLM, the first automated, context-aware content reformatting framework that adapts both content design and presentation to the user’s environment and specific goal. EmbedLLM converts unstructured step-based PDF manuals into 3D spatially embedded instructions in Virtual Reality (VR). The system operates via a pipeline that abstracts the environment into a semantic scene graph, leverages a multi-stage Large Language Model (LLM) reasoning chain to construct step-based instruction nodes and semantic edges, and instantiates these panels using a novel, semantically aware force-directed 3D label placement algorithm to achieve spatial equilibrium and prevent visual clutter.
We evaluated EmbedLLM through a preliminary preference survey (n = 20) across diverse environments and a within-subjects user study (n = 12) comparing the framework to a traditional floating PDF window during 3D printer maintenance tasks. The preference survey showed that EmbedLLM achieves significantly higher environmental alignment than traditional baseline documents, with participants strongly favoring spatial orchestration for complex, structurally demanding procedures. However, the task execution study revealed a clear trade-off: active task support with EmbedLLM resulted in significantly longer completion times (996.93 s vs. 580.46 s) and increased cognitive load (3.00 vs. 2.31 on the NASA-TLX scale). Qualitative feed-back suggests these performance costs stem from the rigid sequential pacing of the generated interface and novices struggling with hardware terminology.
This work contributes the technical pipeline of EmbedLLM, a semantically enhanced physics layout algorithm, and empirical insights on context-aware XR instruction delivery. Future research directions include real-time situated action updates, user skill level adaptation, and integration with agentic GUI automation and text-to-3D models.

Reframing Security in the Age of CLIMATE REfugees, A Comparative Study of Syria and Bangladesh Through Security Perspectives

Universiteit Gent
2025

kesebir
This thesis examines how climate change reshapes security and mobility by comparing two distinct pathways of climate-related displacement: rapid-onset drought and agricultural collapse in Syria, and slow-onset sea-level rise and salinization in Bangladesh. Building on Environmental Security, Human Security, and Securitization Theory, the study argues that these frameworks illuminate important mechanisms—such as climate change as a “threat multiplier” and the political construction of (in)security—but remain limited by state- and anthropocentric assumptions. To address these limits, the thesis advances a Green Theory–informed perspective that centers ecological integrity and climate justice as core security referents. Methodologically, the research employs a comparative case design with process-tracing and pattern-matching across secondary data (peer-reviewed studies, attribution science, displacement statistics, and policy reports). The Syria case links multi-year drought, rural–urban migration, and governance failures to heightened social unrest and onward displacement. The Bangladesh case shows how chronic inundation, salinity intrusion, and livelihood erosion generate primarily internal, incremental mobility with long-term human security risks. Cross-case synthesis demonstrates convergent vulnerabilities (exposure, adaptive capacity, and institutional response) alongside divergent temporal dynamics and policy needs. The thesis contributes in two ways: empirically, by integrating visual and quantitative evidence on climate impacts and mobility patterns across contrasting contexts; and normatively, by proposing elements of a sui generis protection regime for climatedisplaced persons (eligibility criteria for planned relocation, responsibility-sharing formula, and dedicated financing and monitoring). Overall, it reframes security in the Anthropocene toward ecocentric and justice-oriented protection that better aligns with the lived realities of climate-affected populations.

Exploring potential genes linked to dilated cardiomyopathy in zebrafish

Universiteit Hasselt
2025
Flore
Hermans
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of heart failure worldwide, and is
characterized by a dysfunctional and dilated left ventricle. Approximately 1 in 250 individuals develop DCM in their lifetime. DCM is highly heritable, with around 50 associated genes. However, 60-75% of families that show a heritable DCM pattern have no genetic diagnosis. Thus, identifying novel DCM-associated genes is imperative to help diagnose patients earlier and provide personalized treatments based on genotype-phenotype associations. Previously, whole exome sequencing data from idiopathic DCM patients at Maastricht Hospital was analyzed, leading to the identification of three potentially DCM-causing genes, found in seven patients. In the current study, these genes were analyzed using the zebrafish model. It was hypothesized that the targeted knockout of LAPTM4B, PIGV, or ANKHD1 in zebrafish embryos leads to functional and morphological changes resembling DCM. With F0 screening, a CRISPR/Cas9 based method, functional knockouts were created showing mild/moderate edema in approximately 40% of embryos in each genetic knockout. Heart videos were made to assess functional changes, with laptm4b showing a decrease in heart rate and an increase in ejection fraction, pigv showing a decrease in relaxation time and ventricle size, and ankhd1 showing an increase in ventricle size. In conclusion, the F0 screening should be further optimized to fully assess the role of these genes in cardiomyopathy. This study gives a proof of concept, showing that LAPTM4B, PIGV, and ANKHD1 play a role in the function and morphology of the heart and should be researched further.

A Language of Silence: Lived Experiences of Return among Burundian Returnees in Bujumbura Mairie

KU Leuven

Nina
SOUDAN
Silence is often described in paradoxical terms, “loud”, “heavy”, “muted”, or “deafening”, reflecting its complex and contradictory nature. This dissertation explores the lived experiences and narratives of Burundian returnees, with a focus on the events of 1993 and 2015. Marked by violence, displacement and return, these events serve as points of departure for understanding returnees’ interconnected narratives that emerge from realities of political conflict and forced displacement. In particular, it examines how silence is constructed and expressed within these narratives. While expressions of silence vary, returnees’ experiences are consistently marked by the space silence occupies and the meaning it holds in relation to how return is perceived and interpreted. Based on short-term ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Bujumbura, Burundi, in March 2025, this research uses a combination of various qualitative methods, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, informal meetings and interactions.

In a context where a highly politicised discourse surrounding return converges with a long-standing institutionalised culture of silence, this dissertation argues that silence in Burundi functions as an ambivalent space of negotiation between being silent and being silenced, capable of both upholding and subverting power. Drawing on the notion of historicity, the relationality between the past, present and future, it explores how silence operates as a language through which returnees articulate the complexities of their return. In the end, what emerges is a form of enlisement in silence, a sinking into the language of silence that permeates the everyday, as a response to legacies of violence and displacement.

Improving preconception care interventions for metabolically compromised women: the potential of Tirzepatide to restore oocyte quality as a way to overcome obesity-related subfertility

Universiteit Antwerpen
2025
Silke
Roofthooft

The growing accessibility and capabilities of Virtual Reality (VR) have made it an increasingly valuable tool for training applications. Enabling multimodality, beyond purely visual feedback, enhances the realism and effectiveness of training. This is especially relevant for astronaut training conducted in environments that differ from those on Earth. Incorporating haptic devices can introduce tactile feedback in VR, but the current research focuses mainly on devices meant for users’ hands. In comparison, this work explores the integration of tactile sensations specifically in the forearm region. The aim is to investigate whether exoskeletons primarily used in the medical field can be implemented to simulate weight sensation for astronaut training in VR. Gravity is rendered through torque control based on the angular position of the forearm. The system is designed with a focus on its portability and accessibility. Initial results indicate that the technical implementation is promising for simulating varying gravitational conditions. By introducing a way to simulate weight sensation, this research contributes to the underexplored
area of multimodal VR experiences, particularly in tactile feedback on the user’s forearm.

Resight — An Adaptive Typographic and Reading System for Central Vision Loss

Hogeschool PXL

Monica
Hutama
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries and currently affects over 200 million people worldwide—a figure projected to reach 300 million by 2040 (Wong et al., 2014). Despite this high prevalence, most assistive reading technologies continue to prioritize magnification or contrast enhancements, offering limited support for the specific visual challenges posed by central vision loss. In particular, the potential of typography, despite its ubiquity, remains underutilized as an adaptive tool for addressing the specific demands of peripheral vision.

This thesis responds to this gap by proposing a hypothesis-driven reading system that integrates adaptive typography, kinetic text presentation, and eccentric viewing support. Grounded in interdisciplinary evidence from typographic research, vision science, low vision rehabilitation, and reading technology, the project repositions typography as an active contributor to accessible reading.

Two key outcomes were developed: Locus Serif, a variable typeface optimized for peripheral legibility through research-led modifications of multiple typographic parameters, including stroke weight (set between 22–33% of x-height), low stroke contrast, increased x-height, adjustable letter width (narrowing in the foveal region and widening toward the periphery), and scalable serif length (shortened progressively to maintain spatial balance with wider forms). These coordinated adjustments also influence the typeface’s visual rhythm, aiming to achieve an effective balance between heterogeneity and homogeneity—critical for supporting word segmentation and perceptual clarity in peripheral reading. The second component, ReSight, is a horizontal scrolling reading interface aligned to the user’s Preferred Retinal Locus (PRL), incorporating optional PRL calibration via a simplified Amsler grid, high-contrast display, fixation support, and adjustable scrolling controls.

Together, these components demonstrate how typographic design, when grounded in scientific research and implemented responsively, can enhance reading accessibility for individuals with central vision loss. The project offers a design-led framework that invites future empirical validation and potential integration into assistive reading technologies across platforms and scripts.

Exploring Perceptions and Reasoning in Scientific and Non-Scientific Communities on the Ethical Treatment of Animals in Octopus Research. Focusing on the paralarval Octopus vulgaris

KU Leuven

Monnissen
